Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.
Veganism is a form of vegetarianism. There is: ovo-lacto-vegetarian, where you avoid meat, it’s probably the most common and is often called just “vegetarian”; pescatarian, where you do eat fish but not meat; vegan and many variations of all three.
Many people get confused between “plant based” and “vegan”. Where vegans don’t use any animal products- including in make up, soaps and clothes- those who are plant based only avoid animal products in their diet and normally do so for health benefits.
Although there are many reasons to go vegan, there tend to be four that stand out- for the animals, for the people, for the environment and for the health benefits. I’ll try to go into these reasons in more depth in my Why Vegan category.
